The only thing Im aware of that you can buy new thats even remotely related is an extended capacity tank for the diesel trucks. I needed a tank for my 77, ended finding one being parted out. Good luck.

 

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of. People didn't start getting dodges where I'm at until about 95. There is an abundance of 95 to present dodge trucks, but slim pickings for anything older. And the people who do have the older trucks take damn good care of them, so they aren't parting them out.

 

Hopefully you can find something soon. The worst part is most salvage yards are required to puncture the fuel tanks upon arrival, at least in Missouri its that way. I had to look for a few months for mine.

 

In this part of the world they aren't required to punch holes in the tanks - they just do it because it's easier to drain them that way. Apparently not a big trade in used tanks. It's annoying but easier to deal with when it's a metal tank.

As for finding the shorty frame mount tank: start shopping for fuel cells or some kind of bed mounted tank or something brand x that will fit because you aren't gonna find one. Ok, never say never - I scored one last fall but it only took 3 or 4 years to hunt down and it was the last one in a yard with the biggest collection of 70s dodges I've seen since the 90s.

FWIW: a long bed tank won't work. Ya have to get the short bed one with the sloped nosed - especially in a 4wd.

 

Not all of the sloped nose ones are for a SWB. My 77 had a sloped nose one factory.

 

my LRE had a tank in the bed when I got it. I made a big mistake when I made the exhaust and didn't account for the fuel tank when it's in the location the factory made it (exhaust outside frame rail). Now I'm thinking of a tank in the spare tire area and since I now have gauges that are programmable for any ohm sender that will give me more options if needed. I bought a utiline truck that was cut at the frame behind the cab just for the tank....but even knowing I can clean the tank I hesitate linking that to my setup. New and clean is the way I want to go when it comes to fuel. For a driver, I don't care for a tank in the bed...'round here I've heard it's even illegal...although I haven't verified that and I doubt cops are targeting fuel cells in truck beds (bed cover?).
Yea, they punch holes in the tanks here too but haven't seen a Dodge truck older than mid 90's in a junkyard here in a couple of years...at least the well known junkyards. 

 

My LRE has the slope nose tank too. When I scored the square nose for the SWB W100 (ooooppss) I considered swapping them around but really doesn't look like it will clear the cab floor.

Good call on the rear mounted tank and don't know why I didn't go that route instead of patching the old cracked plastic one. The rear tank in a factory dual tank set up sits back there and should be slightly easier to find than a sloped nosed tank. A RamCharger tank is probably the exact same part and moving the filler hose shouldn't be too brutal.

The score I made was filled with water and old leaves and I don't want to think what else might have found it's way in there. Place I found it was a dismantler and had to rummage my way through the mountain of tanks in the back corner of the place. Ya know, next to the old bread truck filled with intake manifolds. About 10 reps of fill / drain / shop vac got most of it. 10 or so tanks of gas later it's all good but a fresh fuel filter would probably be a good idea.

 

The rear tank for a pickup, was only used with the factory dual tank setup. I have only seen 1. Its also much different then a RC/TD tank. I think the rear tank is 22 gals, will fit under a shortbed, or long bed. The RC/TD is flatter, and is like 25 and 32 gals, and I don't think will fit under a shortbed.

 

Yeah, I called junkyards and found three.
Two of them might not have fit, and one was $400 without the sending unit . and that didn't include shipping. I think I can afford to keep this gas tank where it's at! Thanks for the help though, this mught just be something that I have to wait out for the right opportunity.

 

Suggestions for other tanks that could work size-wise with some DIY ability...

- 73-91 K5 Blazer/Jimmy tank (metal, 25 and 30 gal)
- 80's/90's F-series/Bronco aft tank (cab & chassis is plastic)

forward:
- 80s/90s F-series shortbox tank (metal)
- Dodge 2ndgen shorty tank (plastic)
