how can i change the rev limiter on my truck it cuts out around 4500 rpm

There is not an adjustable rev limiter.  You need to find the problem that is keeping it from revving.
In some ways, the stock camshaft and throttle body is the rev limiter on these engines.  I assume you have an automatic.  I know my 88 will go WAY past 4500 but I havn't measured it - just a comparo to my 83 which hit 5500 a time or two (sorry dad)

How many miles on this thing?  Whats the fuel pressure? Compression test results?

Valve floating?
Running out of air?
Retarded timing?
Running out of fuel?

If equipped with an automatic, doesnt really matter anyways....unless you are complaining about "only" running 4500rpm in 3rd gear, which i know isnt the case. That would be 140 or so mph. In other gears, the trans is going to upshift even if the engine could rev. Unless you are fumbling with manual shifts on the column or doing stuff you shouldnt be doing like trying to redline in low range or other such horse play.

Why push it to 4500?

well the truck has 1 tons with 5.13 gears and lockers 38 inch tires so it dont go fast down the road but when in mud and rocks it could use a little more tire spin in 1st gear! but this thing has got 300000 or so miles on it so the motor is a little weak but runs great! i will check the timing, fuel pressure, and compression and see what i get

thanks for the help

The rev limiter isn't the problem. It's the physical limits of the engine. Changing that will require changing the cam, intake, air intake/fuel intake (in this case the throttlebody), exhaust, and/or heads.

If you could make it run 4600RPM, it'd be pointless because you'd actually make less power than at 4,500.

The motor was meant to be a economic, smog, torque engine. None of that goes along with having high RPM HP. They didn't build them that way because it doesn't make them tow better or get better fuel economy.

Camshafts=waste of time in worn out low compression engine.

Still dont know if its an automatic, but if it is, you better hope you never hook and get traction while doing these stunts. Torqueflites arent supposed to be used in low gear like that. The sprag will not tolerate much.
