Replacing column ignition on a 1978

When the key switch went out on my '88 Cherokee, I just installed a push-button under the dash because I didn't want to mess with it.  Someone has done the exact same thing with the Ramcharger, but I'd rather it was just a regular key start.

Are they a bear to replace?  Anyone have a 'how to'?

Yeah.. I know How...
My rig was purchased as is off a repo lot... no key
has a key now but had to pull cylinder and take to locksmith

So I will get some pictures but you will need to pull the steering wheel
there is a thin vertical slot that needs to be pressed down as you remove the cylinder from sleeve.

Hey Skwerly ,
Is your RC just a regular column or a tilt column ?

I HATE tilt columns!!! They are such a pain. Wish mine didnt have one :(

I never use it,  more stuff to go wrong...just my opinion

Ok then all your electric switch is under the dash on top of the column .
My RC is titled as a 79 but it was made in July 78 .
It will be easier when you ask for parts at the parts store if you say GM tilt column cause the parts are interchangeable .
Or is your key cylinder on the column is messed up and wont turn ?

Have you checked the neutral safety switch? Your problem may not be the ignition switch at all.

Hey sometime those switches get a little loose and slip you might try moving it and tightening back up the 2 screws and it be fine .
Or like MoparMaiden said the neutral safety switch be unplugged or bad .
Or PO replaced the Starter Relay with a manual one and not one for automatic and that will cause the key starter not to work . **Automatic Relay will have a 3/8" stud for battery cable and starter cable , a smaller screw terminal for 2nd starter wire , and 2 blade terminals one from key switch and other goes to neutral safety switch .

on the trans  on the driver's side...it has a three prong plug on it. Sometimes they come unplugged, sometimes the wires just break from being old. Or they do just go bad.
