Hey all, first off im new to this site, secondly, i just picked up my frist ramcharger a few weeks ago. Its a 1985 with a 318 4x4. Ive run across a few minor issues with it. Im trying to work out whats going on with the fuel gauge. When i picked it up the gauge was just above a half a tank, i topped it off which costs about 39 dollars. I then drove it up roughly 105 miles. The gauge went up to full when i filled it up but by the time i got back to my destination, it was in almost the exact same position as was when i got it. ive been driving it semi regularyly. no more than ten miles since i got it and i have not put any gas in it since. Well the gauge is still in the same position. I cant tell if i just have a big tank and my driving isnt enough to make an impact on the gauge, or if it is stuck at that position. I did some other researching and read somewhere that it could be a voltage regulator behind the dash, if the engine temp gauge doesnt work either, which in my case the engine temp gauge does not work. but im mainly trying to figure out the gas gauge at the moment. Unless the two are related. Anyways thank you for reading, and if you need more info or something just let me know. Thank you! ;D

While issues with the sending unit and gauge are not unheard of, keep in mind that Ramchargers of that era have a 35 gallon tank, so it may take a bit of driving to get it to come back down.  Figure on getting between 7-12 MPG, which even at that low of mileage, will still take a bit.

That's Mr. Capone to you!!! said:
I currently have the same issue. Fuel gauge is stuck on 1/2 at a full tank. Will go down when fuel is used.

I have tried another a fuel gauge but same issue so will be looking into the sending unit.
Bend the float arm down a little.

Ground issues and corroded terminals can cause the sending unit to read wrong but it's just as likely that corrosion inside the tank has gotten to the sending unit and either is preventing it from reading correctly or is preventing the float from moving through it's range of travel.

On mine between full and half the gauge drops much faster than between half and empty. It makes it appear I have used more gas after a full up but as I keep driving it eventually goes down to empty. I hope this makes sense. My suggestion is to keep driving for awhile but keep a full 5 gallon gas can in the back during this test

  It is not easy to get at but if you can get to the wires for your sending unit you can do a few simple tests.
  Un plug it and with the key on does it go to zero?
  Ground it to the frame and see if it goes back to full.
  Are you getting voltage on your power wire?
  Is there resistance through your ground wire back to a good ground?

Having/had similar issues w/ my 92.  Nice clean, pressure-tested used fuel tank.  New Borg fuel pump and sending unit.  All grounds cleaned.  Gauge that came in truck, the needle would "dance down"--like doing the herky-jerky depending on temp/weather or hitting a bump.  Swapped out the gauge last fall.  It's better but...

Right after filling up the needle might not rise to full mark for a few miles, or until I shut it off/turn it back on.  Sits at full for c.40-60 miles, then comes down.  Stopping at a light, fuel sloshing, the needle will bob up/down like it's sensing/reading properly. About the time it hits the 3/4 mark it'll "dance down" to 1/2, and then creep back up to 7/8ths and act "possessed".  After about 100-150 miles it settles steady at 1/2, and reads OK from there on down.  If I hit a bump it might scoot back up to 7/8 and sit there for a few miles.

It's gotta be an intermittent electrical fault?  Ain't gonna drop the tank (again!) to chase wiring.  Can I maybe just wiggle wires at the FP w/ a buddy watching the gauge to see what's loose?  I just set my trip odometer when I fill up, and around 200 miles I get gas, usually 17 to 20 gals. {cruise}

Sounds like a wiring issue but it could just as easily be a gauge or sending unit issue.  Check all your connections and look for any worn insulation.  For the most part, your description of the gauge sounds pretty normal except the possession and it creeping back up to 7/8 after dropping down below that.
