Fusible Link Sizes

OK, I managed to cross something and burnt the main Fusible Link to the Ignition switch while chasing down an issue.  So now I'v'm going to replace it and my question is what size/which Fusible Link to use.

I see a Dorman/CTI 85622 in 14 ga at 12 Amps and a Dorman/CTI 85627 in 16 ga.

I assume the main link based on it's size before should probably be the 14 ga?

Thanks.
Will

You have to see which link you burned and replace with the same size. Main ones from the battery are 18 and 19 gauge but there's a larger one in there if I remember right.

You should put your vehicle information in your signature line so we can see the year. It's likely the 19 gauge if it's smaller than the 18, but you should confirm by looking at the wiring schematics. Too small a link will burn out unnecessarily, too large won't protect the circuit enough.

Sorry, It's a 1991 1/2 ton with a 318, and Auto.  Yea I understand the protection, and have not yet been able to find a wiring schematic detailing the Link Sizes, so if you can help point me in that direction that would be great.

here's an idea , being you had one misshap allready maybe a good idea to buy a wire diagram, or a factory service manual , the diagrams there all have the link  size required for each location . try dodgeboys here email him , or ebay ? I see 18 and 20

Has anyone replaced the Fusible Links with the MAXI Fuses?

Electrical Issues: Fusible Links - http://minimopar.net/electrical-links.html

Upgrading the Link

Rather than replace the old hypalon link with the same material, you have the option of replacing the link with a more modern replacement. There are two options available. The link can either be replaced with a cartridge-type fusible link ("Pacific Fuse") or a Maxi fuse instead. Pacific fuses come in a few different form factors. The easiest version to adapt is the type with copper lugs that have a hole through them. However, since these Pacific fuses are wired in directly, it makes them more cumbersome to replace again later. Maxi fuse holders are available at most auto parts stores. Since Chrysler switched to Maxi fuses in later models, that is what is recommended.

I put a newer power distribution box on my RC. I then used the Maxi fuses and relays to clean up the under hood wires and had an easy place to hook up fused wires for added options.

the maxie fuses you want are the square ones with the lead button visible in the window , they are what we use to call "slow blow" fuses  so they act more like the link wire than a normal  maxie will . ( look like ato's but bigger)

at one time homes has screw in glass fuses , you could buy "slow blow " ones of the same amperage then max out a circut and the serge didn't blow a fuse hummmm glad that got changed ......

yes and NO  iirc you needed a ? 20 gauge fusable link ? that fuse is WAY too high at 40 amps chedder neatened it up by installing a whole fuse box from ? a dakota ?  by installing what you pictured , you just make the NEXT replacement easier , it will be no neater ..... I'd go for a 10 amp fuse to replace the 20 gauge link wire ...

I apologize if this is the wrong answer, terribly new here, & aside from owning mostly PT Cruisers (which are their own electrical nightmare in & of themselves), I bought this old 1985 D150, (318ci w 2bbl Holley) with 46k original miles. I grew tired of fighting with the issue of it not charging at all, so I replaced the 4 into 1 fusible link setup with a terminal strip (2x4 setup) with jumpers into one 12ga black wire back to the lead, & it now charges correctly, & all my gauges actually work.

I'm currently looking for a way to wire up the taillight into the wooden flat deck I built in place of the rotted out box.

Thanks,
Bob

sounds good , any proper repair of the electric issues on these trucks is a welcome thing . at the same time they are better than the new ones which didn't last the 30 years these have ..... yep we can't reproduce the exact y connection they had .
