Emissions Test

Hey guys I need a little help.

My 88 RC with a 360 carbed engine wont pass emissions.

I have already taken it to a shop and was charged 100 to adjust the timing and retune the carb.  Also at the time I was told that my Cat is firing very slowly and may need to be replaced.  Well after the timing and retuning of the carb my results are even worse now.

Here are the results.  The original test first.

HC GPM    2.8542    Limit of 4.000 Pass
CO GPM    85.3412  Limit of 25.000 Fail
CO2 GPM  643.0982
NOx GPM    2.0376  Limit of 9.0000 Pass

The 2nd Test after timing and carb adjustments

HC GPM    5.3043 Limit of 4.0000 FAIL
CO GPM  153.5017 Limit of 25.000 FAIL
CO2 GPM  669.85.8
NOx GPM  1.1924 Limit of 9.000 Pass

Can anyone help with these numbers??  Also after the timing and carb adjustments its really sluggish off the line!

I ordered a new Cat Converter and its in but on the way back
from the E-Test I blew out my rear U-Joint.  Its only 2 months old.  Im almost ready just to sell this thing and be done with it!

I'd take it back to the shop and tell them to get it right. I've never heard of a catcon "firing slowly." Don't even know what the hell that means. The NOx readings indicate the cat was fine.

My guess is they retarded the timing and didn't even touch the carb.

Hey thanks guys.  Im just waiting to fix the U-Joint.

According the the printout by the shop that did the work it states

Catalytic converter is slow to respond and may need to be replaced if vehicle fails again!!!

However when I picked up the RC the guy told me that it was firing slowly.  Yea PG I dont know what the hell that ment either.  After calling the shop they told me they ment that it is taking a long while for it to get hot.  Yet before I did the emission test I drove it out to larkspur and back just in case and never turned it off!

Now I know that yes it could have failed due to the cat but that would not explain those numbers getting worse the way they did

Spider-Its the stock carb which is the quadrajet I believe.  I have a edelbrock 650 that I was given but I havnt put it on.  I was hoping to pass this years emissions first and then use it.

Update!!!!!

Well I had the new cat installed today.  Apparently the most of the original cat had relocated itself into the muffler!!  OK so now thats done.  While I was at it I had a new muffler installed as well.  Now back to the carb!!

PS  Anyone able to do some fab work??  I need a new rear bumper.  With shackel points or ways to hook up tow straps.  If possible let me know and how much Im looking at.

Thanks

Best / cheapest way to do a tow point on the rear is if you have a hitch mounted to the frame. if you do just get a receiver that has a loop on it. Better ideas may be here though.

Hey Mike.  The reason im looking for a bumper is a couple of months ago when we had all that snow I backed into a brick pillar that was buried in the snow.  It mangled my bumper and had even made it to where I couldnt open the rear hatch.  Well I had part of the bumper cut off so now Im looking for a replacement!!

Also yet another update.  After a new cat and muffler the RC failed yet again.  This morning I dropped it off at the shop that did the original work so I guess well wait and see on this.
