"92 Ram fuel gauge issues

My "92 Ram fuel gauge does not work. With the key off it regesters 3/8 tank. When I turn the key on the needle drops to "E". Almost like it has a bad ground. I can not find anything wrong anywhere. This truck has a brand new fuel pump/sending unit assembly so the problem shouldn't be there. I'm thinking the problem might be in the gauge itself but I can't find a replacement, not factory or aftermarket. Every truck I find in the salvage yards that has the fuel guage under the water temp like mine has the same problem because they all regester fuel between 1/4 to 1/2 tank with no power to the gauge (no battery). Every truck in the salvage yards with the older cluster that has the water and fuel gauges inverted (up through '89 or '90), has a working fuel gauge - they are all on "E" with no power to the gauge. Does anyone know of a fix for this, or will the '89ish cluster hook up to my '92 harness to eliminate the problem all together??? Any help will be greatly appreciated.  {think}

I can't be the only one left on this planet that owns a '92 Ram.
I have a 92 also and a 89 that has a 93 cluster/ fuel sender.
All of them register some in the tank when powered off in my experience. Maybe Dodge did that on purpose. To test if you have a gauge or sending unit or wire problem. You need to get to the plug on the top of the tank unit. Determine which is the power wire from the gauge( it should be powered when the key is on and less than 12 volts, Maybe 4 to 6?. I don't know the color of the top of my head.) and ground it out with the key on. If your gauge reads full it is not the gauge that is at fault. The power goes through the gauge down the wires to the sending unit then grounds out.
You can also test your new sending unit with an ohm meter.
One time I put mine in in the wrong orientation in my pickup and the float hit the side of the tank and I had to turn it. I don't know if that would be a problem with a RC tank but it is with the skinny truck tanks.
You could also check the ground from the tank but I think it shares a ground with the pump so if the pump runs that probably not it.

the gauge for my 91 tells me i have half a tank of gas and great oil pressure and it is not even installed in the truck right now. that is just the way they are. my 93 does the same thing. the one in my 81 on the other hand does not move till the key is turned on.

Sorry DODGEBOYS, I didn't realize you were offering a diagram. Thanks for that but I don't think I will need it unless yours is better than what the Haynes manual has.
The Hayes is worse than not having one in my humble opinion. The factory wiring diagram is very detailed and correct to a single year/truck/options. It is also easy to follow.

Hey Wolfie, my gas gauge used to read anywhere up 1/2 tank but anything over that it would go to empty. My gauge cluster is the same as pictured. Recently, it just registers empty at any level. My pump assembly is new also. Any similarity to yours or anyone else? ???

DodgeBoys, is the wiring diagram the same in the FSM cause I have one and Cheddar's troubleshooting guide looks familiar. I can't imagine the float hitting the side but to check it I would imagine just loosen it and twist? I have a body lift so it shouldn't be major pain to try. What direction should the float go? If I am reading this right it can only be the gauge, wiring, or pump assembly. I trust the pump assembly since it is the newer Carter replacements with the fancy air cleaner filter. The interior wiring now has been chopped and hacked by a young PO with lethal stereo wiring capabilities. LOL

]i put an 89 cluster in my 84 so it really shouldnt matter {gloating}
84 and the 89 clusters are about the same. !990 through 1993 are a different set up.

Fast easy test is to ground the power wire from the gauge at the tank plug, turn on the key and the gauge should go to full. If it does the problem is the sending unit or ground. If it don't the problem is from that point back to the gauge, the gauge itself or power to the gauge.

six gun you should have kept the old sending unit as parts if it worked. i am not sure how the thing works exactly. there is 3 wires running to it. i am guessing all 3 wires are important. maybe you got a bad wire somewhere. i think i remember mine working fine.

Forgot to mention that the gauge did the same 1/2 tank bit before the new pump assembly.  More reason to think it's wiring or gauge.  If the gauge is bad then only option is new cluster?  Individual components are not an option or are they?

i think you could just replace the gas gauge but it would be a wiser idea to get a parts instrument cluster since the speedo's on these things are known to fail. if that was to not solve the problem then i would guess the wiring is to blame.

Sorry guys, I've been off here for a while 'til about a week or so ago. My issue has been resolved. I'm not sure what I did, I'm guessing with all the wire testing I must have "woken up" a bad wire connection. I greased all the connections and the problem hasn't come back since.

Oh, and you guys are right, this gauge regesters fuel with no power to it. THANKS guys, for everything!! :DÂ
