If yours has a cable speedometer the a previous owner changed it. The cable was last used in 1989. You could stick with the older style or repair what the past owner changed.

 

Now I am even more confused. The 91 cluster will not even fit into the dash, none of the holes line up and if I do manage to get it sitting like its supposed to the cluster is 2-2/12 inches away from the holes. 

I am not that great with auto mechanics, I this is my first project and I do hold such a sentimental attachment to my truck I hate to see her get in any worse condition. However, I am starting to believe that this undertaking is going to be far beyond my comprehension.  (not just the cluster)

 

Something is really screwy then. Any 1980s cluster will fit into the same hole and bolt up. Just the wiring and speedo cable changed.  Can you post a picture?

Third is the cluster sitting where is should be
Fourth is the cluster and where the screw holes are.

If i push any harder on the cluster im afraid ill break it there is a large plastic (black in color) that is at the top of the dash and angles down a bit preventing me from placing the cluster any further back

 

now sitting here I have been thinking, maybe i need to install the cluster to the panel and the panel to the dash, if that be the case then I have solved my installation issue. The only other issue that remains is getting the speedometer to work

 

The cluster is mounted in the dash, then the bezel is put on last.
