9.25 axle - setting pinion depth

Im getting ready to do my first gear change , period!  The original (factory) pinion did not have any + or - numbers on it, so, that means "0" , right. My new pinion (Richmond) also has no + or- numbers on it. The original pinion had one shim washer on it (.025) . So I will use that on my new pinion and im thinking that should put it in good place to start checking my gear pattern .( I don't have the tools to measure pinion depth.)
So, am I on the right track here ??

9.25 axles use a crush sleeve, so the pinion depth is set when the bearing preload is set, then the carrier is installed,

please do yourself a favor, get the crush sleeve eliminator set, several companies make these things, and they come with set up instructions and guides.

luck with this, as you will likely also need a set of "set up bearings" to make this task easier.

What is a crush sleeve eliminator set?

Nope. The crush sleeve's only purpose is to properly preload the bearings, it does not influence pinion depth. Pinion depth is set with shims under the bearing like any other axle.

You can use the original shims on the pinion, reassemble then check your ring and pinion heel  toe pattern with your yellow marker grease. And then trail error, AND you can make it easier also by reaming out the pinion bearing to the point the  bearing slides on and off with a tap hammer, your getting a install kit anyway

yup setup bearings are your old ones reamed out to slide on and off easy / always start with the ORIGINAL shim when setting up gears / also dont put the crush sleeve in till the end / during setup and pattern checking just tighten the yoke down without the crush sleeve so you have 10 to 15 INCH Lbs of rotating resistance which is basically hand tight / once everything is OK then put the crush sleeve in and crank it down to 180 FT Lbs
