What years had the lean burn ignition?

You guys were quick about getting me pics/info for the RV2, so lets see how you do with this.  I am considering a 4bbl swap on my `88 now that it is no longer a dd.  Though it is an every-other day driver at the moment(don`t want to get the monte too dirty).  I know that I need the intake manifold, the distributor, the carb(duh), an extra voltage regulator, and the elc. ignition.  I don`t want to get the lean burn ignition, so I want to know what years it was had so I can avoid it.  Also, can I get the voltage reg. off the carbed truck(just thought about it)?  Lets see if this can be figured out by tomorow, I am going to a JY where I can get a very good deal on most any part.

Thanks,
Jake

Why you wanna ditch the TBI? And yet I am about to do the same to my current dd... You didnt address the fuel end of this equation. I did the same, once upon a time. I was able to use (and here comes the "you shouldnt do that's)) rubber fuel line from the return line on the tank as a pickup, bypassing the in tank pump. I disabled the in-tank pump and put in an inline electric pump for carbed engines to address the fuel aspect. Vacuum advance dist. from, like a '75 vintage, built an electronic ignition wiring harness from a wiring diagram in a Chiltons, mounted the ECU and ballast resistor and Voltage regulator and was good to go, I think I am probably forgetting something, or a whole bunch of somethings, but that will get you on the right track.

As for the ignition, why not go with a HEI upgrade/conversion? 4-wires, a coil and a module and your ignition is covered. Since you are going to the jyd, you can score the correct factory GM ends for the HEI module while you are there. (This only works on a carbed engine.)
Hope this helps some

Personally I'd keep/fix the TBI, but to each his own.  Lean Burn/Electronic Spark Control in our trucks was '84-86 but it wasn't in all trucks.  Some had it, some didn't.  You'll find the computer in the driver's fender if it has it for 85-86.  For '84 it should be a large attachment to the air cleaner.

You can use any external V-reg, and I second using HEI if you convert to standard ignition.  it is cheap and easy.

OK, anyone got a link to the HEI conversion info?  For my fuel system, I`m going to get a pressure regulator(w/ return line), and keep my current send/return lines.  So, any pre-84` ignition is non-lean burn?  I have had constant problems with the TBI, and I`ve never had a vehicle with a carb.  I`m going to keep my tbi hardware, so I can change back if need be.

Yes. If not, you will burn up the factory externally regulated one, as it isnt designed to use a full 12-volts to make it work.
Good luck hooking it up since it has no coil wire tower...It just a a button/bushing/spring directly to the rotor.

I'd recommend a ford coil, lol. Specifically from the 5.0 era. Not round canister one. Should have a higher output/better reliability than the normal "blaster" coils so many have switched to.

Ok, ok, so I had a brain fart and was thinking a HEI style coil. One that doesnt require an external resistor. Jeez, one little goof, lol...

Some people, I wont say who...lol. Just kidding Joe

I was thinking about using a Ford style MSD Blaster coil on my HEI upgrade, since 2-female spade terminals would be the extent of the wiring, but now I think I will check out the Rustang coil idea. Hmmm...

There is a reason for the stang style coils. No oil to leak. "vibration proof" has almost a heat sink built in, and "e core" coils tend to be more efficient.

They look similar to this. Ironically, the proposed HEI coil looks almost identical, minus the coil terminal.

Simple hookup as well, and designed around high output modules.

That looks like the MSD unit I looked at yesterday. Looks like a simple bracket would mount it in the stock location on my 440. Just have to find a short coil wire with the correct ends. Any particular brand that would be recommended, as far as the coil itself is concerned?

Other than the connector harness, I don't think anything wrong. Primary resistance is a big factor here. That is pin to pin resistance. Looking for low ohms, not the higher ohms found in older coils.

Well, I was severly dissapointed by the JY I went to, and didn`t find anything I was looking for.  I will have a chance to get one for sure here, umm, soon i guess.  Anyway, I won`t be on for a week, so don`t expect any responses from me.

Thanks,
