Noticed the truck running rich, so started trying to figure out why. I took the air cleaner housing off earlier and let the engine run for somewhere between 5-10 minutes and it looked as though the choke never opened. The engine felt warm, valve covers warm to the touch so I figured the choke should have opened. Ambient temperature was somewhere close to 60°F.
When the truck burnt up some of the alternator harness, one of the main wires that burnt was where someone had spliced a wire from the alternator into the little choke junction box. That box is currently not connected, which I had read was fine it would just take longer for the choke to open and it may not open fully.
Since it's running rich, I'd like to get that junction box back into operation, can I just run a wire to one of the alternator field connections?
Ignoring that, what else can I do to make sure the choke is opening when the engine is warm? I read that the exhaust ports in the intake manifold can plug up, can those be cleaned? Assuming to do so the intake manifold has to come off.
As always, thanks for the help. Getting things checked off one at a time!
