Ok I'll start one more - What about the 'hi-swirl' heads for a 318, (the 302's if thats correct?) It's my understanding that they work good right out of the 'box', a little polishing, a 3 angle valve, maybe some after market valves, and your done.
??? :D

The chambers work good they have a similar w-5 chamber design.

Before we go any further what are we asking of these heads? be specific non specific will get you all kinds of views

ah geezzz - be specific... I hate having to think ;D
Ok - Fairly good bang (in hp) for the buck.
As you say the c. chambers are good design, the heads supposely have good flow as is. So take a jy set of heads (cheap) clean them up a little (smooth out the ports etc, do it yourself as in the other post), do a good valve job, maybe add some better after market stock size valves (not necessary), mill them enough to true them up (if necessary). Now you've got a pertty good set of heads, that didn't cost a whole lot. Throw in a mild cam, like a stock type rv or something. Add stock 4 bl intake, and maybe a Road Demon jr. Assuming you have at least orange box ign., you just popped 30 - 40 hp with stock exhaust, that didn't cost a whole lot, it all bolts together, no fancy milling etc.... Am I off the deep end here...?
Ah i like specific, you bring something to my buddy and he'll teach you specific in a hurry.

Anyway well sure up the valve size is ok maybe lose some valve guide intrusion into the bowl, some light bowl blend work, i would go with a different intake, and a speed demon, cams i'll leave that alone im a little more exotic in that area, porting if you know what your doing and can do it your ahead of the game if you don't and grind the wrong thing even in the bowl you could kill that head, but sounds good
Those heads are only good with bigger 360 size valves. In stock form they flow kinda lousy. They need to be ported. Mopar Performance sells proting templates for them. Once ported and fitted with larger valves they flow good and produce alot of HP on a 318.
Thanks for the feed-back guys. These kind of bench racing bs sessions are really fun :D
300le you are right....
ED3 - what intake(s) do you have in mind ? Is it really worth the money for an after market manifold ? I'm just 'warming up' an 18, not build a racer. (The only racing is the occasional smart-ass 'stop light race' ;D) I know they flow better, weigh less etc... but is the extra expense really worth it, I'm not really looking for top end as much as low end....
Thanks
I like to get everything out of everything Oman so im kinda bad when it comes to doing things in a cheap way, my theory is will a cast intake work sure it will, will an aftermarket intake work sure it will, will it flow that little much better yes it will, then that's what's going on there, to me it's worth it, i understand what you guy's are thinking that's why i left the cam issue alone since i would go with a roller.
Now my theory on the intake is the edels are so much better than a factory intake in mid rpm and that is where they shine so for that reason the mid is picked up more than with the factory so they win the spot to bolt to the heads, i throw out ideas you can do it or not or leave it for a later upgrade, but this is what happens when you talk with people and see there views, some you use some you don't some you mix with something someone else said, like for example with C300 i would port those heads and go with the larger valves without thinking twice.

Now that you said your looking for low end have you thought of stroking it?

Thanks again ED3 - I completely agree with what you are saying, at least in theory. It's not that I'm trying to be cheap, it's just a budget thing.... Also since I'm in CA I have to try to keep this thing sort of smog legal - thats a little hard - sometimes I wish I had an older rig - I could do the whole thing. I'm also kind of following in my old mans foot steps, back in the '50- '60's he built a lot of bad A$$ cars by 'mixing and matching' factory stock parts and super turning. I guess I kinda got a weird science project going here - how much can I pull out of an 18, keeping it somewaht legal, do it on a budget, with mostly stock style parts !!
Now you see you throw emissions into the equation and it is a whole new ball of wax, and to be very honest i only know how to cheat them by external views, such as it looks like a 400 but it's 490 inches or it looks like a 360 but it's 400 inches, it has the smog crap on it, but it really isn't functioning and the carb is running lean it's running real hot and advanced just enough to sneak thru, emissions are a problem here wht i do to get past it is with the trucks and cars now i just run the Jeep thru and say i broke the windshield i need another and slap the 1st one on the truck, it's easier than sitting there on pins and needles if everything you did is gonna work.
I didn't mean the cheap thing as a stingy way i meant it as frugal maybe that is a better way of explaining how i meant it
