All Ramchargers were built using a Dana 44.1978ramcharger said:
There were three variants of the 44, these are;
1) Full time axle with small 5 lug pattern and unit hubs,
2) Part time axle with standard hubs that use lock outs, wide 5 lug pattern, and,
3) The CAD axle which also uses the large 5 lug pattern and standard hubs but has a drive flange instead of lock out hubs.
The Dana 44 was also offered in 3/4 versions which use 8 lugs. These include,
1) Fulltime axle with unit hubs
2) Part time axle with standard lock out hubs, and,
3) The CAD axle
All Dana 44s will have a '44' cast into the pumpkin, near the yoke, and regardless of lugs, will all have ball joint ends.
The Dana 60 never came with unit hubs and was not offered with CAD until after 94. These will have a '60' cast into the housing and always use king pins.
There was also a Dana 70 used by Dodge which can be distinguished by closed knuckles.
Finally there is a Dana 44 clone, GM's 10 bolt front axle uses many of the same parts and design of the Dana 44, but it has the GM pumpkin, which can be easily identified by it's round cover.
