I am looking at buying an 89 Ramcharger 4x4 with a 318. The owner doesn't know what tranny is in it, since the PO swapped steering columns to a non tilt/cruise...it could have gotten rid of the o/d button.
What are the chances of it having a 518 or a 727?

Its really hard to say. Most 89's came factory 518's ,but some 727's were still being offered then I think. The only way to tell is to drive it really. Unless it still has the o/d button.

Doesn't the 518 have a much deeper pan than the 727?

Thanks Bogger 35! I'm pretty sure that the 518 does have a deeper pan, I thought I heard somewhere once that if you took a pan from a 518 and stuck it on a 727 you'd be able to have a couple extra quarts of fluid.
