I was looking and I see a few different choices. Is there a better one for a 89 rc with 318 auto? I saw q-stae atf +3 and dexron mercron but I'm not sure which is best - Mike

Is it an overdrive or not? I know with the overdrives you need the atf+3. Non overdrives w/lockup need it also, non overdrives non lockup can use dexron III or type F.

are your paticular year you could probably get by with either. I seen Advance Auto parts has thier own brand of ATF+3 for less then $2 a qt now. You could just put that in there and not worry about. ATF+3 can go in older transmissions that used dextron III, but dextron III can't be put in newer transmissions that call for ATF +3

Do not put dexron in your tranny!!! I made that mistake. I blew a tranny line and i lost tranny fluid. The closest gas station had only dexron, I put it in just to get me home. Well, the tranny acted like a big bag of sh*t for the next couple days. It didn't go away until I did a tranny flush/filter change. PLEASE ONLY USE ATF+3 or higher!

using dexron most likely didnt cause that, mixing the 2 probably did. i use dexron in my 89 and 90, one without od, and one with, and neither have problems (although EVERYONE says my a518 should be dead 5 times over by now.) if in doubt though, go with atf.

ive read that many times. i still know that dexron III in a 727 without a lockup converter is fine. type f is also fine. and despite what that site says, i have used it in my a518, and it has been used in it for 350k miles, and it too is fine. and again, if ur in doubt, go with ATF.
