What do you guys think?

I was thinking of may be a library type section with peopele that have factory shop manuals and maybe the after market manuals. Something like list the member and the manuals they have. Like if someone need something out of a say '83 shop manual they could look in the library for a memeber that has that one and they could IM them about there questions. Then the member with the manual could scan the page and e-mail it to them or something. Its just a thought, I've been getting some of the odd ball year manual off ebay lately just to have them. Like a '74 manual I don't have a '74 but theres some different info in that one compared to say a '75. What do you guys think or does this sound like alot of work?

I've been kinda thinking the same thing. But maybe in the form of digital e-books that we could download.
I think it is a great idea, but I do see two stumbling blocks. On is that the manuauls are copyrighted, so you would have to find someone willing to disreguard the copyright (and be willing to deal with the possible repurcussions).

The other is, providing you found someone willing to disreguard the copyright legalities, find someone willing to scan in the pages.

Other than those two minor hurdles, why not?

This is a great idea. It would take a lot of work to implement though. In addition to the problems already stated by Glenn I see one more, some of our members probably don't have scanners. I don't have one anymore and I don't plan on getting another one. So I wouldn't be able to take part in this.

I guess I didn't think about that. Well maybe just not scan the pages. I've seen pages scanned from shop manuals before on the net. Like Carl's tech archives on moparts it full of them. How do they get by doing it?
I like the idea. Let me know if I can help ya.

in order to do this, i am not sure if yo uwould have t opublish a bibliography page along with it or give copyright credits to the author or publisher of the book. might even have ot contact the publisher themselves t oget permission to actually popst hte pages legally.

but it is like someone else posted earlier, if you have people who arent worried about the copyright laws then it can be done.
other than that the pages may have to be typed in by hand instead of actually scanning them.

maybe we could use this library thing as a reference - if someone has a question, they can IM the person who would have the answer and get help that way. This would cut down on the whole copyright mess.

Even just a list of who has what books might do it. Then Like PJJ said you can IM whoever has the book you need.
i dont think that sharing this info wold violate copyright as long as the sources are cited. in my field we constantly reference other works, and use quotes, but as long as they are presented as someone else's material in a quote then it should be legit.

yeah - what he said ! ;D
ok well I'm going to go out on a linb here and say I'll scan any book so long as the pages are not hooked together (maybe in a 3 ring) I have a 800 Page per minute scanner at work (ok getting it here soon) so it only takes a sec to do then burn to CD the only thing is getting it to Me and back and the pages have to be apart for this scanner to work. We use this scanner to scan in mannuels for work.

I have no scanner, but I have a digital camera with the macro function. I can take pics of whatever someone needs (diagrams, explanations, etc). I have an 84 and a 90 fsm.

I like that idea, and it should avoid any legal problems, along with helping a lot of people of out...
i think we should pursue this! then have it in the same area (make a new area) as the Vin Decoder an the How toos. maybe an Archive section. if folks were willing i dont see why they coundnt just send a letter or e-mail to the publisher asking permission an explaining that it is not for profit. isnt that what copyright laws are for? to protect against from financial loss of pirated or selling copies?
i can see somebody putting in that they have a book and then get anoid cause way too many people want info from it and they re getting plastered with IMs. my personal opinion is; what s wrong with the HELP forum? that s what it s there for right? through your question in a couple of forums and see if somebody bites. if not, go and buy the damn book. not trying to be a prick, but come on! if you got a vehicle that you expect to work on, you better have some tools, right?
i ve already flipped through my Chilton's and Haynes a few times to anwer questions on help. if somebody is gonna go to the point of anouncing they have a book to partake in this idea, don t you think they d just as well offer some info when they saw a question they could help with.
its to avoid the same help question being asked over an over an over again.

do a sight search on CAD an youll see what i mean
that's why we try to expand the FAQ section....latest addition: How does CAD work.
i saw that! Kthaxton did a great Job! i think ill do a how to on how to swap the fork on the vacuum motor. i have one laying out. but my point was on how much repeated questions there were.

Santak how difficult would it be to create an RCC Archive section? one that you could (i mean you! cuz your the smart computer guy!) add important info too! that could be accessed by a more specific search tool? nothing concerning marties dress wearing or crap like that but good tech info an how toos that dont make the how too list. like the one on the help board that walks you through the Rear Main seal. but a how too was never done on it.
well, let me ask you specifically what sort of data we're talking about and I can give you a better answer:
if you think of scanning all FSMs and have them available for keyword search, then i would say, that that is a major system we're talking about. Those sorts of things sell for big bucks out there, so you probably get the idea of what we're talking about.

If it is just things like "how does my CAD work" or specifics of our trucks that pop up on the help board every 2 weeks, I would say at this time: go for the FAQ expansion and if those get filled up, you can always do a search on those 50 something threads via the current search function. Or to say it in other words: as of now, I don't think the amount of data requires nor does it justify spending a lot of time archiving it and provide the necessary access tools (if we're talking about those FAQ/How to things).
As for that data, I am thankful, that Kendall took the time and put together the FAQ and I would love to see more such things from regular members you know what is needed. If you have an idea, bring it up and we'll discuss it.

Further, I would wait with an implementation of that until we are on the new server, which will take a little more time, because Sam is busy and the swap will require a little more work, because it is then truly our server with all responsibilities behind it.

Sorry, for the fishy answer, but give me an idea what exactly you have in mind and I most likely can refine my answer.
