Ok, there's a truck on ebay that's here in Maine. It's listed as a 1978 4x4 with plow There's a couple pictures of it, too.

When I run the vin through the decoder, I get:

You entered the VIN Number: W4BE85102289

W4 MODEL DESIGNATION W400
E GVW CLASS 16001 to 19500 lbs
5 MODEL YEAR 1975
02289 Sequential Serial Number

What does the designation W400 mean? I'm going to contact him about the discrepancy in the year too.

What years were full time front ends? (cause the ad says it has lockouts)

Thanks,
Ted

Thanks for the info on the full time front ends. I figure he just typed the vin wrong. I'm going to ask him.

The front grille on that truck is from a 77 or 78. 1977 used clear turn signal lenses like the picture and 78 used amber colored lenses. I have a truck sitting in my driveway that looks just like it with no hubs...mine is factory full time 4 wheel drive.

I thought the W400's that i can remember is the 400 and 500 series trucks that didn't look like a p/u like that and were dually rears and d-80's with stake bed backs

coop, i don't have any elaborate pictures like Chump {cool} but I do have a 79 FSM that reads as follows:

MODEL WHEELBASE ENGINES G.V.W BODY
W15 115-131 225-1, 318-1, 360-1, MMC 6050 Pickup 1, 3, 4
W2 131 225-1, 318-1, 360-1, MMC 6900-8400 Pickup 1, 3, 4
W3 131 225-1, 318-1, 360-1 10000 Pickup 1
W4 135 360-1 11000 Pickup 1

So yea, there was a w400 in 79, which probably means there was also one in 78. But that doesn't explain why the vin says 75. Unless he read the vin wrong. An 8 can easily look like a 5.

Thanks Hybrid. I'm thinking that he just mis-read the vin. I sent him an email, hopefully he'll reply.

I got the correct vin from him, it checks out.

W1 MODEL DESIGNATION W100 or W150 for 80
4 BODY TYPE Conventional Cab W/Sweptline (Standard Box)
B GVW CLASS 6001 to 10000 lbs
E ENGINE TYPE 318-1
8 MODEL YEAR 1978
S ASSEMBLY PLANT Warren Plant No 1
102289 Sequential Serial Number

Now, did 78's come with full time front axles?

Thanks everyone!!!!

Yes they came with full time front axles. It is possible that this has been converted to part time and has a Milemarker kit in the xfer case and Milemarker hubs?
