Ok i have a 1989 ram charger which is currently on 36x14 inch super swampers on rims w/ a fairly large off set. So far all i have had with the stock front dana 44 is problems. First of all the housing is begining to bend secondly the ball joints go bad and most of all the wheel bearinngs need to be replaced ever few months not to mention the breaks arnt too great. So i'm looking into upgrading everything to dana 60s and possibly going up to 38 inch tires because from what i hear i need larger diameter rims as well to fit over the breaks on a 60. My questions are:

1 what would the ideal gearing be for the 60s with 36 or 38 inch tires that would allow me to do some medium duty towing. (suzuki samurai woods beater also on 38s on dodge axels hehe)
2 what diameter rims do i need to fit on dana 60s
3 will the breaks work w/ the stock breaking system in an 89 rc or will the master have to be upgraded.
4 is there anything else i should know about these axels ie nightmare getting parts, common breakage etc before i jump into this?

Thanks for any advice you can give me.

1. 4:10's or 4:56's would do,
2. you can run a 16 or 16.5 rim easily. Some grind the calipers to fit 15's
3. brakes should be fine, I didn't change anything on mine.
4. parts are common, with your tire size...breakage shouldn't be a concern.

1) personal opinion, 4.10s would be best if ur gonna tow anything, u could go to 4.56s if u plan on off roading it a LOT.
2) u can grind the calipers to fit 15s, but some say thats not a good thing. i would go with anything 16in or bigger.
3) big tires need bigger brakes which need more pressure. do us all a favor and swap in a system from a 1ton.
4) parts are pretty common, as long as u get 60s. a 61 and some 70 rears have been know to be problem axles, and 70 fronts are often closed knuckle and are a pain to get parts for and fix.
