I was reading the latest issue of Mopar Muscle and they are doing a build up of a '89 Diplomat. Anyway, they say that the transmission is a A999 ? I haven't heard of this tranny is it some variation on the 904 ? Just curious.

yes it is. It came out around 81. First i'll tell you that there is also a 998. It is a heavier duty version of the 904 with more clutches. The 999 came out and even had more clutches then the 727 and it had a wide ratio transmission. First gear on the 999 is 2.74 verses the old 2.45 and 2nd is 1.55 verses the old 1.45. Even with more clutches it has some features that aren't as heavy duty as a 727 but the 999 takes about 30 less HP to operate. Most 999's are lock up trannies

All 999s do not have the wide ratio gear sets, 999 was introduced in 75 for the 360 cordobas and had standard ratio 2.45 gears, wide ratio (2.76 low) was first available in 80 MY and then by 83 they dropped the standard ratio altogether. 999 and 998 trannies have the 5 plate dayton front clutch and larger kd piston bore. 999s also have double wrap L&R band.
