I have a 98 ram 1500 4x4 w/ a 360. The problem im having is when im on the freeway my truck will shift into 1st, 2nd, and 3rd with no problem but it wont shift into 4th (overdrive). But when im in town it gose through all the gears. Its also running at higher RPMs now. On the freeway i was at 80mph at 2000rpm's but now i'm running at 70mph at 2100rpm's.
Also when im in town and just let off the gas it wont down shift like it use to all it dose now is feel like its in nutural. The truck doesnt sound the same either the exhaust isnt as loud as it ues to be. I have a 1 chamber flow so its always suppose to scream. It just dosent do that anymore.

Anyone know whats going on or what i can do. :-\

The higher rpms are indicative of your torque converter not locking up, which will also prevent OD from engaging.

Could be your TC is going out, or the computer has a fault code in it that is preventing it from telling the TC to lockup. At this point you need an OBDII scanner :(

When the tranny went out on my 94. The TC stopped locking up, but i did go into overdrive. In my case the transmission didnt' make it another 50 miles.

So have a shop run the codes on your trucks computer and you will find the problem might be on the computer side and casusing the truck not to shift properly .

The overdrive kicks in first, then the converter locks up. Could just be a bad overdrive solenoid, but might also be a faulty or clogged purge valve. If this isn't working, the overdrive can't engage. It'll need a diagnostics run.

Ok just see this, the dropping out of gear when off the gas is pressure problem or a valve, if you have the adjustable pressure cable it can help your problem.

The breather if it's clogged just take it off the end of the hose and blow it out then put it back on, if it is clogged and not addressed it can build pressure in the trans and cuase problems ranging from foaming and over heating to leaking past the seals.

Are you sure you submerged the transmission fully? if you think you did let is sit and check for signs of water on the dip stick, a light pink fluid is what trans fluid looks looks like when mixed with water, if it's not much you may see some signs but it won't be a problem as if it was the other way.

There is another pressure adjustment on dodge transmissions, for race transmissions like what i use in my car it is fairly easy since i hook the guage in and i can adjust it from outside without dropping the pan, in your case you would need either me or another experienced person in this procedure to do this correctly, the only other people i know to do this correctly are in CT and IN also unfortunately of no help to you right now, neither am i for that matter.

If the trans was low on fluid it very well could do the dropping out of gear, the not going into OD could be a bad plug and the comp is reading something wrong and not activating it. This puzzles me
