i will be attempting to rebuild an a518 very soon. how involved is it? any special tools needed? also, where is a good place to get the parts to rebuild it? any books or videos to guide me? any other info would be appreciated.

I just stumbled over an article in an old 4wheel & offroad when they rebuild and beefed up their 518 on their 94 Dodge truck. Don't know if that is of interest to you, anyway, the mag is July 2003 page 28

I've never done a 518 before, but it should be pretty similar to the 727 untill you get to the over drive unit. I read somewhere once that while rebuilding the overdrive unit it takes a ton of pressure to get it back together, hundreds of ft. lbs. I bought my rebuild kit from napa for $70 and that came with EVERYTHING, a majority of it I didn't use tho because I didnt' feel like replacing all the seals.

Yes, be careful when disassembling and assembling the OD unit, direct clutches are held by a 700 or 800 # spring, it could bite you. what year is it?
