I have an 89 D150 2wd 318 lwb. This is a tow vehicle for a race car. I was a chevy man till they killed the f-body so I am not very familiar with mopars. The 3-4 cluster went out in the NP833 and the parts alone are $250. What will interchange? I know there was a 5 speed available in that year. Is the shifter the only problem I will run into there? Mine has the side linkage shifter not the top mounted shifter. Are there any other options? I have 390 gears so I need O/D. Does any one have an NP833 for cheap? What about the electronics? There is some kind of speed sensor (?) by the speedometer cable plus another plug I am guessing is a reverse sensor. Am I right? What is the speed sensor for? Will it put me in limp mode if I leave it off?
Any answers will help but I dont see spending $250 to rebuild a manual transmision. And before I spend the $750 for a salvage yard tranny I will swap in a 350 SBC and a TH350 for the same price.
I also am wanting to upgrade the rear end. Just a stock rear would be an improvement because the previous owner put a 8 1/4 rear end in it for some reason. I do at least want to upgrade to 3/4 ton or 1 ton springs I saw on another post this would work. Would a beefier 3/4 or 1ton axle have the same prevision for the ABS? If I go through the trouble of swapping rears I would like to set it back up for ABS. Also what would dodges 373ish gear be.
I want to keep this swap simple but cheep. I would rather not cut the floor to acomidate for a different shifter. Maybe some one just has an NP833 3-4 assymbly they would sell for cheep.

Only person i know of who has these parts is Jeff aka Estwingr . He has his own site @ www.mopartruckworld.com . He has the parts u seek for the tranny hell he probably has a complete one laying around i think .

AS for the up graded axle u sure that isn't a 9.25 axle ? If not get a 9.25 from 88-93 truck all u will need to swap is the tone ring for the ABS to work i thin k?

As for gears 3:55 is stock for dodges well there is 3:23 gears which u find in about all of them cept a few have the 3:55 gearing . About as close to 3:73 in the stock from u will find .

There is two versions of the 833 transmission. The one you have is called the Overdrive-4. Before about 1976 the 833 was a normaI 4 speed. Not many parts are interchangable between them. The OD-4 wasn't known to be that reliable. It wasn't totally junk. just not a super long life tranny. I know Jeff at www.mopartruckworld.com has a few trannys. How do you know you have 3.90 gears in the 8 1/4. Thats not a factory gearing option for that rearend.

The rear end in my truck seams to be from a Dakota, Dorango, or a Jeep. I used the old trick of turning the tire two turns and counting the driveshaft revolutions. It turned just under 4 turns but a good bit more than 3 3/4. So it has to be close to 390 or 391 whatever would be apropriate for a mopar.
That aside I have one posible lead on an 833 but if that don't pan out I will checkc with your sorce. I am still interested in a 5 speed swap or more sorces for the 833.

Well Dakotas had a narrower rearend. 92 or somewhere in there and up have 6 bolt lugs too. Remember to call it the Overdrive 4 because people will think your talking about the 4 speed of the muscle car era. Big value difference too. For 5 speeds go with the NV4500.

Well I guess I found an 833 O/D out of a 85 Ram so it should be an O/D 4. As far as value if the musce car ones are worth more than I'm glad I'm not building a mopar. Damn this ones worth $750. I can get some GM trannys that have been gone through by a performance pro for that. Thats why I've always been a GM man. Curse them for killing the f-body. I hate to patronixze them by building a GM but I cant aford to build a Mopar. And I wouldn't even think of using the f word.
