I had the timing cover off this weekend to check the timing marks/chain on my '86 W150. I have installed an Edelbrock Performer plus cam and Edelbrock chain. When I aligned the two circles the engine was not at TDC(valves not closed but #1 at top) after one revolution of crank it was at TDC and dist pointing somewhere around #1. The gears can only be put on one way. Is this normal? The reason I am concerned is the Haynes says that the oil pump gear should align with #1 IM bolt and Dodge says should be parallel to crankshaft. I don't get either setting after trying all possible gears. Mine points to outside of both of these specs. Possible cam issue?

I'm sorta confused on what your saying. You said the engine wasn't at TDC, but after one revolution it was at TDC. Well if you made one complete revolution then you are back where you started which i bet was TDC. I bet you thought it wasn't at TDC because the distributor was 180 degrees off. The cam and distributor turn at half the speed of the crank. Line the dots up and your cam will be right, but that dont mean your distribtor is right. Make sure your engine is at TDC which it sould be if the dots line up i think. Then pull the distributor gear out and move it till the slot points towards the front drivers side intake bolt. Then drop your distributor back in.

After alignment, one revolution of the crank is what I meant so that the small gear's dot was up on top again but the cam gear's dot was also on the top. This is where the valves where closed. That is what I meant by off. I thought the dots should be aligned at TDC and they are not.

actually when you time an engine this way, it is not necessarily to have the number one valves closed.

a real easy way to check how close it is and get you within one degree either way, is to put number one at TDC, then put number one lifters at the overlap position (will need intake off to check this) then see where your dots line up at this way.

may need an offset cam key to get them just right. in the long run it is easier to degree the cam

this is a little secret from ray bartons bag of secrets.

2ram, w/# 1 piston at tdc and crank dot on top and cam dot on bottom aligned w/each other will put the cam/crank in correct relationship. once this is done, bring # 1 to tdc on compression stroke. pull up oil pump shaft/gear and rotate it enough to get slot correctly aligned w/#1 im bolt. install dist w/ rotor pointing to # 1 plug wire. should be good to go after final timing adj. good luck --sheriff--
