ive mentioned on here that my boss gave me a 78 aspen 4dr. he replaced the timing chain and couldnt get it to run so he left it set for about 2 years. now i know the stag fuel has a lot to do with it but what could make this thing run so bad at idle?

i was told it my have bent a valve or "p" rod. once you get the rpms up it sorta smooths out. running 5 gal gas w/16 oz. of B-12 right now to break this varnish up.

If the engine has a knock in it, (Audible banging noise), whether in the upper of lower sections of the engine, it's a possibility. If not, it may just be that the carb is that gummed up. Check the choke pull-off. YOu didn''t say what engine we're dealing with here, but if it's a V-8, it could be anything from a clogged heat cross-over passage to bad gas to the carb or like you've indicated, stale gas and lack of octane. I bought a boat with 142 hours on it and gs that was over a year old. 40 gallons worth....I ended up buying the Pro Nitro addative, (A half gallon), and topping off the 55 gallon tank with 15 gallons of 94 Sunoco, before my 454 would run and idle. 2 tanks of gas later, it's like it never happened.

Tell us what type of engine your Aspen has and we might be of more detailed and focused help.

the engine is a 318 but i found the problem. i borrowed a compression tester and its not good. i tested #3 and got nothing so i went to #1 and got 120 after 3 strokes. so i tested #3 again wet and still nothing. i guess ill be pulling the heads off unless theres something else i can do to get compression back.

i did a wire pull and #3 7 and i think it was 6 were not changed put the plugs are hitting.
