In the interest of clarity, remember that's the name of the carb, not the manny. If the carb is off, one big visual clue would be to see if the bore is 4 holes of 2 different sizes. Smaller 2 holes up front for the primaries, and, you guessed it, the larger 2 in back are for the secondaries. If they are 4 of the same size, then it's not for a Thermoquad, or any other spreadbore carb.
Give more info if this doesn't answer the question. Do you think you know what carb's on it if installed, if you don't, then pull the air cleaner and describe to us. Do you have a Chilton's/Haynes manual?

The truck had no carb when I got it, I bought a Edelbrock 1406 carb, in the directions it says to buy adaptor if I have a Chrysler Thermoquad manifold, so I'm wondering if I need to buy that adaptor. I Have a 1971 truck with a 383D engine.

Are the holes in the intake manifold pretty uniform in size? A spreadbore (Thermoquad or quadrajet) manifold will have bigger openings on the rear where the carb goes. It will probably be split (not have 4 individual holes) down the middle front to back. If it doesnt have the same size holes, then you will need the adapter. I beleive edelbrock recomends the 4 hole adapter, not the open center adapter. The Zone should have the adapter, about 20 bucks for it.

ok lets see if we can clarify this a bit

if your manny looks like this OO
o o

then it is a spread bore manny and will fit a tquad or a rochester

if it looks like this oo
oo
then it is a square bore manny and was designed to fit afb's/edelbocks/and most holleys

if it looks like the first one and you have that 1406 you will need a spread to square bore adapter, autozone carries them for about $15

eric

ps: ignore the angles of the holes they wont be like that on the manny, just look at hthe hole size for comparison
