I ripped the driveshaft out of my 77 shortbed the other night and (after removing said driveshaft) drove back to town using 4 Hi.

The problem is that the t-case would jump out of gear when I was slowing down if I did not physically hold it in gear.

Are there likely problems I can't see or maybe an adjustment on the t-case linkage?

I adjusted the linkage on my 203 to hopefully fix the same problem. Mine was hitting the end of the shifter bracket and not fully engaging.

adjustment may help. but it is also likely that it's time to rebuild the tcase.

You should have it in hi lock or low lock when one of the d/s's is missing. The torque will make it jump out of gear if you aren't. highly normal.

i saw one occasion where the body had shifted due to cab mounts rusting out and the body metal was hitting the shifter, knocking it outta gear.highly unlikely-ramcharger man has the right answer i think.
