I JUST BOUGHT MY 1998 RAM 1500 AND HAVE A COUPLE OF QUESTIONS.
1. DOES THE STEERING WANDER LIKE A LOST DOG ON ALL OF THESE TRUCKS AND CAN ANYTHING BE DONE TO FIX IT?
2. WHAT BRAND OF SHOCKS WORK WELL. I WANT A DECENT RIDE BUT DON'T WANT TO BE BOTTOMING OUT LIKE IT DOES NOW.

Howdy and welcome to the board / Please fill out yer personal info that shows below yer user name / then fill out yer SIG that shows at the bottom of yer posts when you post with yer truck info / then hop on over to the Chapter boards and sign up for the state [CT] that you live in / and enjoy the best damned DODGE site on the web

first thing you hafta do is smash the CAPS lock button on yer puter / Caps on the internet is like yelling in person / its just not cool

if yer truck is a 4x4 then the wander is caused by the track bar and its pretty easy to fix / if its a 2wd then its the idler arm / if its bottoming out then it needs new springs and shocks wont help

If you have the square cast iron steering coupler (the little box that connects the steering shaft to the steering gear box) the bits inside can wear out. MOPAR sells a rebuild kit it is only about 8 dollars (I don't have the part number but if you do a search on the site you should be able to find it). A pretty simple job but you will need a few punches to drift out a coulpel of pins. This site also has several different types of fixes for the steering ranging from cheap to $$$. You can install a steering ujoint from a Neon to replace the coupler you have, or you can fork out some $$ and get the Borgeson replacement shaft, people rave about them.

Could be your springs, if you have a 2wd you might check you ball joints and bushings. Shocks are alot like tires and oil filters everyone has their favorites. I have always like Konis and KYB's but those were always on my cars.

Cheers

Could be the track bar , but look at the joint on the steering box, grab the shaft (oh boy) turn the shaft by hand and notice the movement in the coupling on the steering box, you will see the play in it if it's bad along with feeling it
