seems like the rc boggs down a little when I ease on the gas. beyond that , it seems ok. does this indicate a ruch fuel mixture?

Check for vacuum leaks...make sure the carb is bolted down tight and the carb-intake gasket is in good condition.

the carb is a brand new edelbrock 1905 795 cfm q-jet. However, I had a shop, "set the mixtures" cuz they seemed really wacky out of the box. Now it seems worse.

I am going based just on what you posted because it could be other things besided your carb but since you are focused on your carb, please note that your Edelbrock has step up springs that can be tuned, and also you can mess with the rods and jets to tune it for your altitude and application. I don't know the altitude in Lodi but you might want to find out.

Also, click on this link and see if this explains a little more about the step up springs: http://ramchargercentral.com/boards/index.php?board=33;action=display;threadid=35776
