I think the 2 ways are very useful. I perfer the mobile mounted unit. With all the thrashing around its good to have it fixed. You don't have to get out of your truck all the time for up to date info. I mounted my antenna on my spare tire rack so the base is out of the way, just a little prevention of knock it off by branches. My last outting though I lost it from all the vibration so I need to get a new one. This time I will safety it to the mount. I leave my radio in the truck all the time and I don't think no one wants to steal them these days. So ya, I think there a good idea.
