Who can tell me if i can swap out the bellhousing section off of my 318 727 with a regular BB 727 i got layin around, and mate it to the tailshaft section and transfer case......they are both 727's, right? Is this the way everybody does it or do i need to locate a "so called" BB 727 4x4 trans? Please help!

You can't swap out bell housings on a 727. It's a one piece design and blends with the rest of the transmission body.

You can swap internals between a SB and BB 727 and you can swap tailshafts between 2wds and 4wds.

oh yeah, i know it is a one piece design, i just didn't know how to word it properly........So, I can take this 440 and 727 out of this 76 new yorker and swap out the internal components in the transmission body, and then just bolt up the tailshaft and transfer case off of the small block 727? (sorry if this sounds like i'm asking the same QUESTION again, i just want to make sure i know what i'm getting into) ALSO. anything else i need to know about the swap ? If you have any other info, i sure would like to know, thanks

For the most part, yes. Keep in mind that there are some variances which may not work (Such as overdrive 727s and such)

Aren't the OD versions of the 727TF the A-518 and the A-999?

I'll be using a mid 70's TF, so overdrive won't be an issue. I have a truck pan off a 440 so thats also taken care of. As far as the engine mounts go....I made my own mouts to drop that 400 in my 66 valiant and fabbed all the manual shift linkage, so i think i can handle the motor mounts. All that is left is the power steering?

Power steering is no problem either.. Find a PS equipted BB car in the JY, pull the brackets, pump, & lines.. Install the pump.. and between your lines and the JY lines.. take some notes. amd what doesn't connect have a local Hydraulic hose company build up for you..

I apologize. I should have said that there were some variances with some 727s having lock up torque converters, not OD.

I've been working on swapping a 440 from a car into my truck also and here are a few things I've learned:
Need truck exhaust manifolds.
Need truck oil pan, sump and dipstick.
Need 4WD truck motor mount brackets.
Same rubber motor mount works for all SB and BB engines.
Need water pump housing that exits on passenger side of engine.
Technically, there is a different radiator for the BB's that have both the inlet and outlet both on the passenger side, but I have seen people make it work with the SB radiator using a "custom" top radiator hose.
If you swap parts from a 2WD to a married 4WD 727, you will need the stub output shaft and adapter housing from the 4WD version. Sometimes there can be slight differences between other internal parts from year to year and duty rating (4 planetary vs. 3, steel bushings vs. plastic, etc) . Make sure that you don't mix these different parts between the two transmissions or you may get the incorrect endplay (different bushing thicknesses) and the tranny won't go together right.
This one's obvious but I thought I'd mention it: A distributor from a 383 or 400 won't work with a 440 RB.
Kickdown linkage is different also between a SB, BB and RB.
Hope this helps. Good luck to both of us. ;D
