My 77 R/C is a PITA to refuel. I can't just put the filler nozzle into the tank squeeze the handle wide open and set the clip and wait for it to be done. I have to throttle it down and trickle the fuel in till it spills out otherwise the damn thing will cut itself out. This was way worse when I lived in the Seattle area because even the filler nozzles are emission controlled with that stupid vapor catching hose around the nozzle. Its not as bad here in backwoods Idaho since our emission laws are nill unless you're in the Boise area. But I still can't fill and forget like the newer cars & trucks. I've removed the tank and filler neck and there is no restrictions leading me to believe that the problem lies in the age of the truck. My plan to fix this is to cut the filler neck and door out of a 93 Cavalier sitting in the yard (pics in the Idaho chapter page) and put it on my R/C. Any one think this will work?

I removed a kink that was in the vapor release hose (name???) that comes out the top of the tank and connects to the fuel filler neck. This improved it greatly.

Well I just got the filler neck out of the car and hopefully enough of the body panel that I can weld it to mine and use the flip open door. Got to thinkin this might make a good how to so I'm loading the camera.

The vent is clear. I think maybe it joins the filler neck too far from the top and maybe fuel is getting in there and not letting it vent while filling and then later running down into the tank.

I have the same problem with my 76. I have to hold the nozzle in with one hand and use the other to hold the trigger. Might be the results of Ma Chrysler's earlt attempts to prevent the use of leaded gas in unleaded gas vehicles.

I recall in the early/mid 70s, car manufacturers were converting their engines to use unleaded (only) gas so they just jimmied the filler necks to prevent the use of the larger leaded gas nozzles.

In later years they re-engineered the filler necks so this problem went away.

My truck does that, here is what you may have to do to fix the problem, in the nozzle toward the end you will see a few a holes in it what i have to do is have those holes showing on the outside part of the filler neck, if i shove the nozzle all the way in like it should be it will just keep popping off, just pull it out alittle at a time to see where it stops popping off that's all you should have to do

My uncle had a fairly new chevy truck a few years ago that did just that. He did like Marty did and just played with it until he figured out how far he could put the nozzle in with leaving it locked open.

Yeah, my '79 RC had this problem, so I sold it. :p
But my Power Wagon dosn't do it, but its worse. Instead if I leave it auto filing it'll just go untill its full, then it starts overflowing. Think it needs a vent tube but I'll probably rip it out, maybe do a fuel cell.

I've even gotten the gas pumper kids mad at me. They set it and walk away, then "click," so they walk back over, try again, "click, " Then they ask me if its full and I say no, its empty, just a weird filler, etc.

same problem w/86 r/c, once put gas in filler and must have compressed the air in the tank and I had a gasoline geyser back out the filler. anyway, the problem was the air tube on the top of the tank, I guess the tubing got ripped and some one sealed it over with old fashioned sound deadener. opened it up and ran a new tube open to the air. I guess this was once connected to the charcoal cannister under the hood. btw had to drop the tank to fix this but might be able to feel around on the top of the tank to see what's there.
I never had this problem with my 72 pw! good luck doug
