The 203 has one shift lever. underneath the truck it goes into a box like mechanisim mounted on a bracket to the transmission adaptor. from that it has two rods (or levers) that go to the transfer case

the 205 has one lever inside. underneath it connects to 1 rod that goes to the transfer case where it connects to a flat bar , that connects to two shafts that go into the transfer case

this E-bay link has a pic of a 203

this one shows a 205, you can see the bar for the shifter

I hope these links work, and hope that it helps clear up any confusion

I'll verify that for you Mr. Superburban. By the way, the NP 203 shift lever assemblies were manufactured by Hurst. ;D

Your RC would have originally been built with a NP 203 but it could have been modified over the years. The NP 203's builder's plate is located on the case above the front output shaft, so if it is a NP203, you can identify it from there. Often, this plate will get covered by a good layer of "Dodge grease" so it sometimes can be hard to find. ;D

If you have a 205 and *if* you put 10W30 in it thinking it was a 203, then you should drain it and put 90W gear lube in it.

The question is: is the shifter mechanism on the side of the case (203) or the front of the transfer case (205)

Before you go off and change the fluid, make absolutely sure it is a NP205. Check the back of the case beside where the output yoke is. There should be a small round cover about 50 or 60 mm in diameter in the center of the back of the case. If that cover is not there, it is a NP203.

The reason I tell you to make sure what case it is, is that if you do change to 75w-90 gear lubricant, and it is a NP203, the case will destroy itself very quickly as the lubricant is too thick and will not lubricate the upper input and output bearings effectively. A NP205 will live quite awhile with 10w-30 oil in it, in fact, a lot of people who live in cold climates actually run motor oil in their NP205 gear case with no ill effects, although it will be 40W or 50W.

Good luck

hey man post that pic and we will be able to tell for sure.

didn't you post a while back that you had a conversion kit in your rc to make it part time 4wd?

if this is the case then someone may have actually changed it to a 205 and added locking hubs to it.

if this is the case then not only did you score with the big block but also got an almost indestructible t case with the deal. ;D ;D ;D{cool}

let us know

JP check your e mail I sent a page from my manual that should help you determine which one you have. Looking at the pictures the location of the fill and drain holes is the easiest way to tell the difference. I wouldn't want to try to explain that without the pictures.... Good luck ;D

I agree, that is the fastest way for most people to ID a 205.

Here is one pic Juha has posted. Upon close inspection, it does appear to be a 205:

Juha,

That is one excellent rig you have there. Who ever installed the NP205 did a nice job on the transplant.

Good luck with it...
