8 1/4 has a roundish cover and the 9 1/4 has a "stop sign " looking cover

There is only few D44s used in 1/2 ton Dodge trucks.  All are passenger side drop, 3,500 lbs rated, ball joint, low pinion, standard rotation D44s used from '72 -'93.  '72-'74 trucks will have a part time D44 with drum brakes standard, rare discs optional and the large 5 on 5.5" bolt pattern.  Then the '75-'79 full time D44 axle that had disc brakes standard but had no locking hubs with the full time design.  They also used an odd open bearing design that is considered weaker than the previous and later designs and used a weaker 5 on 4.5" bolt circle.  Next came the '80- late '84 part time D44 that returned to the old style bearings and hubs and large 5 on 5.5" bolt circle.  These axles usually came with automatic hubs from the factory.  The late '84-'93 D44 axles have the CAD system, but are otherwise identical to the '80-'84 axle described above.
