Mudflap and I are about to change out my oil pump, and we were wondering what is the best way to prime this thing before we start reassembling? 88 Ramcharger, 318 TBI, 200k, no internal mods, just plain stock. I'll check back on this in about an hour or so. We're going to go drop the pan now. Thanks....

If all you are doing is replacing the pump, and not rebuilding the engine, then all you have to do is fill the oil pump rotor cavity with engine oil. Turn the pump a bit while pouring oil into the pickup port. Some will drain while you install it. It doesn't take much for a new pump to get going. After install, you could crank the engine over a couple of times, before firing it up.

i keep an old oil pump driveshaft laying around for just this kind of thing.

i usually set the new pump in a bucket of oil, insert the driveshaft in pump and hook driveshaft up to a drill and run the drill for a few seconds, this both primes the pump and lets you know that the pump is indeed working.
