Since the VIN decoder is pretty much finished, I have been thinking about the part number deal we talked of a while back. I am going to be quite busy the next couple of weeks do to the wedding, but this is something I do want to get started on.

Now, I think a big question we need to tackle is weather or not part numbers need to be confirmed before they show in the database. Or do we just let members add at will, and list a disclaimer or something asking people to let us know if there are any wrong part numbers listed.

I think most of the members here post some pretty accurate information most of the time. Its not to hard to write the part number off of the box and the store where it was purchased at
IMHO I think letting the members post the #'s with a disclaimer would work.

I agree, the disclaimer route is the way to go. I am also willing to verify any Autozone part numbers.

I can make it so Mods and Assitants can change the entries, so if something is wrong it can be easily fixed.

I may get started on this tonight.

What fields do we need?
Part Number
Name
Store
?

Each part will be in a category, so what categories do we need?

Engine
Axles
Suspension
Transmission
Transfer Case
Electrical
Body
?
?

oh yeah, oops :)

On year, we will have a start year and end year for the part numbers.

I want to make this all drop down menu style to prevent anyone mispelling, etc, so we need to list all model types.

Also, we need to be able to have multiple vehicles. Maybe something like - pickup, ramcharger, W150, W250, W350 - something like that for maybe a headlight or something that they would all use. So we need a list of all models, I can already tell this is going to be fun to do :)

Ok, this is what I have so far for part number fields

  • Category (see list below)
  • Part Number
  • Part Name
  • Vehicle
  • Vehicle Year Start
  • Vehicle Year End
  • Manufacturer
  • Store Purchased From

and the Category list is

  • Engine
  • Axle
  • Suspension
  • Steering
  • Transmission
  • Transfer Case
  • Electrical
  • Body

Should we add an emissions one? What about drivetrain stuff like driveshaft and ujoints? Should we change Axle to Axle and Drivetrain? What about Exchaust? Maybe Engine and Exhaust? How does the FSM break it up?

well, when the part list stuff is done, you would do a search for your year, model and forwindsheild gasket in the body section.

Then you aren't looking hard enough.

We need more input on this, I want to do it right the first time, it is easier that way instead of having to go back and change everything around.

Ok here goes. You mentioned about the factory service manuals. Here's the different sections (from an 84 fsm)

Front suspension (includes all info on front end-axles, diffs, ball joints, etc)

Rear axle

Brakes

Clutch

Cooling system

Electrical

Engine

Exhaust

Frame structures

Fuel systems

Driveshafts/U-Joints

Springs/shocks

Steering

Transmission/Transfer cases

Tires/wheels

Body

Heater/Air Conditioning

Emissions

As far as emissions go, I think that would be a tremendous undertaking. Aren't some things different even in the same model years?

I use the NAPA site to get some part #s and check prices. That could be a source to double check some part #s.

Also, what kind of copyright laws would be broken if those of us with a fsm were to post wiring diagrams? (I know, this is off topic, sorry)

That sure is alot of different categories. Should we go with the same layout the FSM uses?

As for copyright laws, I am not too sure. I have heard that if you give credit and aren't making money of the info, like selling it as your own, you are ok with copyright stuff. I would imagine that since we basically promote Dodge, they wouldn't attack us but who knows? Anyone else have some better info on this kind of stuff?

Yea, it is a lot of catagories. Probably some could be combined, although it's kind of idiot proof that way.(aka cooper30 proof ;)) I don't know much about creating things on computers, but is it possible to start out simple and have the capabilities to expand as people get more and more part #s for the different catagories? (does that make sense?)

I'm not real creative, but I can type and do basic stuff to help. I think this is a great idea, especially for the out of the ordinary parts and stuff. I had a hell of a time finding a part # for spindle bearings. :)
