Is this thing all it's cracked up to be? Will it help my tired old 400?

Depends on a lot of variables that your rig might have to deal with besides the orange box. If is is tired as you say then there probably other things on it that are tired too and the best ignition system in the world won't fix it by itself.

I could never tell any seat-of-the-pants difference between the orange box and any other. If your engine is worn, no ignition will save it.

However, you have to add a stronger coil like a Blaster 2. The box alone will do nothing. The whole idea is to upgrade everything i.e., plugs, wires, coil, and the box. I just put one on my tired old 400 with good wires, Champion plugs and a Blaster 2. It ran so much better, I had to turn the idle down. Also, make sure to play with the advance on the dist. It helps to get your "total timing" up to spec. This is usually done with an advance timing light.

I've never done a comparison between a factory one and the orange box but my brothers Mirada had some cheap parts store replacement and this car would start popping and missing around 5000 rpm. Right when the engine was pulling hard. I put an Orange box on it and it eliminated all the missing and popping and the engine pulled hard way past the 5000 rpm mark.
