This sounds stupid, but I have an optical mouse which reads jittery on the wooden desktop. I got rid of my ratty old mousepad, should I replace it? I thought the idea of the optical mouse was more percise movement. Am I wrong?

I would try it out on a piece of paper just to see if the wooden desktop is the problem. The optical mice are supposed to work well on smooth, flat surfaces. If the surface of the desk isn't too smooth, it could cause some erratic movement.

I just tried mine on my desktop without the pad and it's a little jittery. Get another pad and see if that helps. When I bought mine it said for best performance to use a pad.

I tried the paper and it works great now. I guess I will get a new pad.

Thanks!

If the surface has a lot of texture (i.e. a wooden desk) then the mouse is going to read all of the fine movements, thus making the pointer really jittery. That is a by-product of the number of sensitivity of the optical reader.
