Dodge NP435s came with either the wide ratio or close ratio. Not sure what years available.
NP435 6.68, 3.34, 1.66, 1:1 Chrysler
NP435 4.78, 2.39, 1.37, 1:1 Chrysler

My Jeep's NP435 out of a 68 Chevy P/U has the 4.78:1 1st gear as verified by me before I put the tranny in.

I have been through piles of 435's, and I have never seen a close ratio dodge one. Not saying they didn't make them, but they aren't very common. I have seen some 445's, that are fully synchroed and have a 4.56 first gear. Most 435's only have one PTO cover, all 445's have 2, as well as some 435's. I can't help you ID a close ratio 435 since I have never seen one.

My '68 W200 has the original "close ratio" np435, so I'd guess that if you found one, it would be from a '60's Dodge truck, with the very short divorced tailhousing. I would also guess that this is a fairly rare transmission since most people don't even know they exist.

A 1968 fsm that I have lists 2 np435's. Both are listed as single pto. The ratios for these are:

np435d - 4.56, 2.28, 1.31, 1.00 and reverse 5.65

np435 - 6.68, 3.34, 1.66, 1.00 and reverse 8.25

Using the fsm's from 1971-1987 that I have, the gear ratio's remained the same for the np435 and np445d. There is no close ratio np435d listed in these years so I believe that the np445d replaced the np435d some time between 68 and 71. The np445d was always a double pto tranny and had a syncronized first gear as opposed to a non syncronized first gear for the np435. The ratios are:

np435 - 6.68, 3.34, 1.66, 1.00 and reverse 8.26

np445d - 4.56, 2.28, 1.31, 1.00 and reverse 4.07

The np435 was single pto until they stopped using the np445d about 1979 or 1980 and then it became a double pto tranny.

Also np435's from other makes have slightly different ratio's. Here is what Petersen's 4wheel & Offroad claims are the ratios for np435 for Dodge, Ford and Gm ( April 2000 ):

Dodge - 6.68, 3.34, 1.66, 1.00

Gm - 6.50, 3.34, 1.79, 1.00

Ford - 6.69, 3.34, 1.79, 1.00

Hope this helps to clear things up!

I've got a stock np435 on my 79....
How can I tell if I have the wide or close ratio?
79 RC?

Then I would go out on a limb and say you have:
NP435 4speed

6.69, 3.34, 1.79, 1.0 ;D
I have a '79 with the 445 (4.56 1st gear).
On a 79 (if its the original trans), if it has 1 pto cover, its a 435, it has 2, its a 445 (close ratio).
If you really want to know, get under the truck and try to find the identification tag on the trans, its near the top on one of the sides. tells which trans you have and the 1st gear ratio.
