I can see now that there is more of a difference than just in the front fenders and grill. Compare to these pictures here:

there is still a lot of old U.S. WWII surplus equipment being used over in Europe to this day as firefighting equipment and reserve Army stuff. I thought they had merely modified an old Dodge power wagon carryall.
