hello all! i have just purchased a 92 1/2 ton 4x4 with 318, and auto overdrive trans. the motor has a rod knocking, the trans makes a strange noise and slips in reverse, and the transfer case growles like a mad banshee... the transmission shop wanted like 2200.00 to fix trans and transfer case. i was wondering which trans and tc i had and what other years would fit. and maby some other potential problems with my truck. i am an import car tech and can fix it all i just want to do whats most feasable, and maby end up with stronger truck. TIA tom

i kind of like the idea of the overdrive trans myself...one question though. the kds site you have listed says the 231 would be in the 88-93 and that the speedo cable would be in transfer case... would that limit my options? can i switch to the 205 and run speedo to the 518 trans or would i have to switch to the 727? also i'm having speedo issues now and thought it was ecu related... could it be that the problem with transfer case is causing those problems as well

The 205 will only work witha 727 trans .

AS forthe speedo yank the cable out of the trans and see if it is broke it's a plastic gear . So if it's gon u needa new speedo cable .

You cna find the 208 or 241 t-case about anywhere . the trans is up to you but keep the 518 OD it's worht keeping but have it rebuilt or DIY .

Also mopst tranny shops will charge u about half of what u got quted if take it out and take the trans to them to rebuild

Keep the NP 241 TC and 518 tranny. It's a good combo and should give you good life if you treat it right. The main prob with the 518 is DONT tow in OverDrive. That'll trash 'em. Your speedo cable comes out of the Transfer Case. It's that way with all 4x4's, so if you wanted to put in a different TC, you would hook your ground speed indicator to the TC. However, on a '92, I don't know for sure how it works, 'cause it's electronic, so you may wanna see what other members here say. Good luck and welcome to the site.
