neutral safety switch ????S

i got a my 87d100 that had the /6 a833 combo in it, but now has a 74 400/727 combo i was told i had to have the neutral safety switch. my ? is do i have to have it????

I had my neutral saftey switch go out on my on the trail one night. I bypassed it and have since put in a new tranny with a new saftey switch. I still have it bypassed though. I can start my truck in gear now. I don't really have any plans for hooking it back up, except for making the backup lights come on when I put it in reverse.
