ok here's the deal. i'm trying to figure out what to do with the 360 in my trail duster. the truck was sitting in a run-down garage since about 1992 until last april. the motor runs decent since i put new gas and oil in it but backfires a bit and usually i have to keep my foot on the pedal and keep reving it so it will stay running. what would you do if you had an engine that was sitting that long? should i pull it out and rebuild it?

What year is the engine...carb or FI?

If it is carb'd, the carb is probably all varnished/goo'ed up from the gas that sat in it. I would rebuild the carb first, and do a complete tune-up before I went through the hassle and expense of rebuilding the entire engine. I realize it is part of a tuneup, but on any backfire the first thing I do is check the timing.

maybe not a rebuild...........what about a ignition and carb tune up ???
do some checks to see if rebuild is in the works. compression check or preferably a leak down check. simply looking at the oil can tell ya a lot. check for vacuum leaks also. gaskets hoses ect. maybe check the heads.

thats a good point,i'll definitely change the timing chain because i'm sure it still has the nylon timing gears. i'll look into getting a rebuild kit for the carb too. it doesnt leak as far as i can tell, the oil filter was leaking but thats been fixed already.thanks for the advice.
