Best way to check is with a mechanical test gauge. I just did this on my 77 440 and the dash gauge was reading erratic and near zero. Test gauge said 30# at idle so I replaced the sending unit. Now the dash gauge says 30# at idle. I think I should get my money back from Dodge, that sender only lasted 27years! If you get a replacement sender get one from NAPA, I've had problems with some of the other stores junk senders.
