78 R/C Full-Time 4X4, Dana 44 Front

What is involved with replacing my full time 4x4 with front manual lock out hubs?
Is it worth the cost and/or possible fuel saving?

Thanks.

Mile Marker makes a kit to put lockout hubs on the 70's 4x4 trucks. It also has what you need to make the transfer case a part time case. In my opinion this is a costly way to do this and not worth the trouble.

Another way to go is to get a front and rear axle and a transmission/transfer case from an 80's Dodge 4x4 and replace your setup in your rig. You need the front and rear axles because the wheel lug pattern was changed. you can just use a front if you don't mind carrying two differnt spares though. You need the transmission because  the tailshaft is different from the 203 case and the 208/241 case. This can also be costly.

Why do you want to make your full time into part time? If it is for gas mileage don't bother. You won't see much difference and what little gas savings you may, or may not, see would take years to offset the cost of the changeover.
