I need to put a remanufactured engine in my truck. I have 200K and it's getting a little tired. 1985 RC

My question is, if I have an engine internally balanced does it have to be externally balanced to the torque converter and flexplate?
OR
Can I just pull the old engine and reinstall the new engine since my old converter is balanced to the flexplate already?

Maybe I'm asking the wrong question altogether?
Thanks for the replies

Are you using the 318? If you have an engine balanced you do not have to go to any further lengths after it is assembled. A 400 engine is externally balanced requiring the correct torque converter and harmonic balancer. I am certain that the 318 requires no such special stuff.

The 5.9 requires an external balance weight. Up to some point in 2000, the 5.9 had balance weight on the torque converter. From 2000 on, the weight is on the flexplate, and the converter is a zero-balance unit just like the 318. If the 2000 up converter is used, the matching flexplate must also be used, as the 4-bolt pattern will not match pre-2000 units. The 2000 up units have a sticker on it and a "ninety degree" stamp to distinguish them from earlier units. These are used in warranty work on older trucks, since the crank bolt pattern remains the same as pre-2000's. One option you have is to use a 318 flexplate/torque converter (if you already had something like that) with a balance plate from B&M that bolts between the converter and the flexplate. On the 727, if you're starting fresh, just get the converter for the 360 you have.

If you get the engine internally balanced when it`s machined/rebuilt you`ll need a nuetral balance (318) converter, or grind off the balance weight off the 360 converter. Also need a nuetral balance crank damper.

I guess it looks like I'll have it balanced to factory specs then. Sounds like the simplest thing for me to do, and I am pretty simple (minded). LOL
Thanks to all that have posted.
