I'd like to nominate myself for idiot of the year with this little story, I figure everyone can always use a good laugh. I should keep this to myself but what the hell. Earlier in the week I posted a question regarding a severe clicking sound from my right front tire on my 88 RamCharger. After reading the replies to my question I'm thinking the axle shaft u-joint is bad. Now since I'm kinda new to repairs I went out this morning and picked up some jack stands and a hub socket, get home jack up the front and spin the tire and can hear the clicking.....alright it's defintely the right front I'm on the right track. Low and behold the wheel center cap is hanging on by one screw and flapping all over the place, seems it was damaged on the inside and someone boogered it up to hold on. Removed the cap...NO MORE NOISE...quite embarrising but at least I have new jack stands and a hub socket for when I need them....plus the rest of my Saturday. All I need now is a new center cap which I don't hold much luck in being able to find. Hope I gave some of you a laugh for the day.

Gotta love it!  Well, you needed to jack it up to find the source of the noise anyway.  The jack stands will help make you work on it safely and will come in handy in the future.  Not a total loss, but at least you found the source of the noise and got it taken care of!  Always nice when 'repairs' go easier and faster than expected!  ;)

You won't get my vote.  In my opinion you took steps that were appropriate and what I probably would have done.  Sometimes you get off easy with simple little things like this.  To your credit you aren't fussing about "wasting money" on the jack stands and hub socket.  Trust me, those will come in very handy in the future since you can now service your own bearings, hubs, do the U-joint job down the road when needed do a complete brake job, etc.  Enjoy it while you can, the next time that little noise might be something really bad, lol.

Been there, done that!! At least you got away with a cheap fix. And yes, that hub socket can be worth its weight in gold!!

That was good news , that it was a cheap fix. You can get cheap center caps at Discount tire, I believe I paid $5 a piece for them, The name is unique.

To win the award you would have had to post here about the noise near your front wheels, jack up the rear and remove your brake lines thinkin this will help, get angry and spend the rent money (several months worth) on a new dynatrac pro rock d60 for the front and then realize after its install while putting the wheels back on what the real problem was ;D

point is theres no stupid questions , Glad you figured it out................. Now you can focus on more important things like drooling over those pics of pro rock 60s it the back of 4X4 mags (wife calls them carporn)

see I was thinking the idiot of the year award would go to the guy that never checks his breaks then wonders why he's not stopping when his rotors are gone.

Well I'm not voting for you.... LOL....... As El said what you did was very smart, most people would have driven it till the wheel fell off then wanted someone else to fix it for $50.......  :-\

Just think....

You probably wasted money on jackstands, because you likely will never need them again. Old concrete blocks, rocks, tires, or hydraulic jacks work "just fine".  ;D

Well I need 24,000lb capacity (pair) to hold up about 3500lbs of front end weight. :p

2 ton floor jacks will more than lift 1 corner of a truck, but they don't have the reach capacity for a 4x4 (w/o adding all kinds of blocks and extensions).

3 ton floor jacks will reach, but weigh 85-105lbs.

I may need to try out that harbor freight aluminum jack, I think I have a coupon for $60 for it.

Now that you are a fancy card carrying welder, I bet you could make a custom set of these for cheap:

Sorry you have disqualified yourself for the Idiot of the year award. I see through your plan, to justify the purchase of tools because of "catastrophic mechanical failure". ;)

(My wife has figured it out too  :-[

Ah hell...we've all been there and done that. Look at it this way...at least you didn't have it towed somewhere and pay someone to figure it out. 8)

I found a pair of center caps through these guys...paid $20 for them, but they were in very good shape.

While they may cost slightly more, these are by far the best looking centers you can have on a stock 80-93 ramcharger.

I saw pictures of a RC for sale about 2 weeks ago that showed the cooling fins between the spokes on one front wheel. I don't even think my wife would drive a vehicle like that.

Like everyone else, i wouldnt even nominate you for an idiot of the DAY award. Just cause you diddnt notice a loose cap before jacking it up is nothing.  You noticed a noise, obtained the equipment needed to safely troubleshoot the noise. Found the noise. Fixed the noise. Have the equipment to safely perform future maintinence.

If you want to be thrown in the running for dumass of the year, you are going to have to try ALOT harder then that.  Sorry for the bad news.
