how much voltage

how much voltage should i have at the battery with the engine running. i have a stock alt. mine is going from 11.6 to 12.5 it wont hold still. i had to add water to my battery this morning and i am charging it now to see if that will help

Sounds like your voltage regulator might be going south...

try the old positive batt cable disconnect when the motor is runnin , if it dies , the alt is bad and u need a new one, if not possibly the voltage reg is bad, but just for fun try to take the positive cable off while its runnin ;D
