The transmission pan gasket leaks like a sieve, so it needs to be replaced. I guess I will do the filter while I'm in there as well. I also have another question. What about a deep sump pan, is this readily available at most hot rod shops?? Might as well do it if I'm going to drop it anyway, yah know? The trans is a 727. Also thinking about an external trans cooler, to give the transmission and the radiator a break. Any recommendations on these? I'm looking to spend under $80 on the cooler if possible.,,,,Cruisin.

How about a filler tube gasket? Is it an O-ring and also readily found???

A deep pan and a cooler combined is a little overkill IMO. Just get one or the other. I would get the cooler myself, I just installed a B&M 24k lb unit in my rc. Really easy to do. My Haynes manual for just a fuid and filter change, not a flush, its 4 quarts. Be sure to grap a couple extra quarts, just because. The o-ring on the filler tube is notorious for leaking and then looking like it is the pan gasket. Its just an o-ring, nothing specail, so they are readily available.

ok for the filler tibe, yes it is an 0-ring, easiest way i have found to get the right one is t ogo down to napa or oyur favorite parts store, take the filler tube with ya and measure the o-rings till you get one that fits, then buy a bag of them for about $2.00.

my tranny cooler, i believe it is the 20,000 gvw one cast me about $40

a deep sump pan can be ordered from summit, and if oyu get one of those i could not really tell you how many pints to put in, since it will depend on size of pan

also, while oyu have pan dropped and replacing this stuff, make sure you adjust bands at the same time

Why would a pan and a cooler both, be overkill? I don't get it. The cooler the fluid is, the better off your transmission is. Oh well, guess I will save the money and get the cooler instead of both. Cool about the O-ring, and I will take the tube with me. Well, the main leaking/drip area is on the left side, and there's orange silicone all over the place. I swear people that use that stuff should be shot, lol. Just my opinion. Seems every time I find a leak on a vehicle, that stuff is there. ::) I've never had a leak with black permatex, that stuff rocks!!,,,,Cruisin.

Thanks for the help!!

Oooooh, adjusting bands?? That's more than I want to mess with really, unless it's easy as hell to do. With my luck I'd end up burning one up later on down the line.,,,,Cruisin

adjusting the bands is fairly easy, you will need a torque wrench and a 5/16 8-point socket.

all oyu have to do is, loosen the lock nut holding adjuster, back off adjuster approximatley 5 turns or so, then tighten adjuster to 72 in/lbs, if oyu dont have a inch pounds torque wrench a foot pounds will work, if using a foot pounds one tighten the adjuster to 6 foot pounds.

after you tighten adjuster to the proper torque, back it off 2 turns, then tighten lock nut down to 35 foot pounds.

go to next band adjuster and do the same.

easy as can be

Well, I already did it all, this evening. No band adjust. It was a rubber gasket, so I guess it can be adjusted later. Painted the pan, cleaned the bejesus out of it, magnet and all. No more smoking on startup, from the night before drippings on the exhaust pipe. Feels good. I also bought the cooler without checking. Someone had put one in already. Never dawned on me, since the radiator didn't have the lines, I never thought of it. It's pretty well hidden, and the lines are low in the engine compartment,,,,Cruisin

should I put the other one on anyway? Double them up? The existing one is fairly small, and no radiator cooler at all?

The one on there, is a small two tube, with fins, about 12 x 4.5, somewhere around there? The new cooler is a Hayden 678, supposedly enough to cool a class C motorhome, towing 5000 lbs. Or so the box says?,,,,Cruisin

Tile and sheetrock and paint, what a way to spend a Spring day. Oh well, it keeps the wife off my back, lol!

FYI radiator "cooler" is only a cooler in name, it actually heats the fluid to a minimum temp of whatever your radiator is running at..... I have always bypassed the radiator cooler in favor of my own setup and never once had a transmission failure.

It is a cooler, that's why it is there.
Did you notice how old this thread is?

actually it was found on a search so no flipping through pages.... to find anything.... was looking for reference to the fill tube o ring replacement.... someone should do a how to on that little bugger, I cleaned Tiff's tube up on her truck not any fluid coming from there, must be just from the pan.... going to go with a summit deep sump pan I think with filter, filter extension pan and gaskets.... that should take care of the leak.... any advice to offer while doing a tranny gasket.... ?
