You don't have to have roller lifters for a bigger cam. The advantage of roller lifters is that they allow the cam designers to design lobes with better profiles for rate of lift, max lift and duration of lift, over what can be done with regular flat hydralic lifters. Additionally roller lifters reduce wear and friction.
Swapping cams is an art. You need to know first what you want from your engine, as it's way too easy to pick the wrong cam for your needs. For Example, a cam that produces greater torque and fuel economy is completely wrong for a dragster, and likewise a big cam with an irregular idle will be wrong for a tow rig.
