OK, another help question. I am looking at headers for my RC (stock 318...will have a Dynomax exhaust system in it before I do the headers). I am curious to see what headers you guys have had success with in your '90 318. What brand (Edelbrock, Dynomax, Hedman), part number, etc.? Thanks much.

i was looking into headers and talked to some local buddies and they have ran every thing from hooker to dynomax and most say stick w/ manifolds headers are really hard to seal and keep sealded and the heat issues and having to plug the block the say if they did it all over again the would keep manifolds just what i have heard and seen them always fighting with them it was eneuf for me to keep my manifolds

from what I understand the biggest problem with headers is their flange thickness. When they heat up, the warp and end up leaking. However, if you look around, there are headers, namely Thorley, that have a flange that is pretty much of the same size as the stock manifold and I have nothing but good about these....but I'm still waiting on my set.

I had a set of Hooker headers for about five years now, They are great. Use good gaskets and you'll never have a leak.

I have used HOOKER's for the last 13 years. (same ones) they have gone through some gaskets, but when the gaskets are good, they don't leak, and sound great. In those last 13 years, I have used 3 sets of gaskets, and two of those were because of engine swaps.

I have a set of full lenght headers now (company unknown) and they suck. I'm buying a set of Hooker SHORTY headers Part #5811HKR. They should be good, have allway done good with Hooker headers in the past.

before you install the headers, make sure the part that attaches to the head is flat, a machine shop can true them up, and headers are a good thing. Make sure you install a heat shield around the starter tho. ( In my '81 it takes 4 hours to change the starter, so I made sure it is protected)(440 tuned up, makes a lot of heat)

i have summit headers with a milodon 4x4 deep sump pan, and i hate them. They might be liveable with a stock oil pan but its just one headache after another with these things. They leak..they require lifting up the side of the motor to fit them in..and then the issues with the starter...the list goes on. I'll be replacing them with some stock 92-93 magnum exhaust manifolds when i can find a set.

Well, another problem with the summit headers that I have only recently found out.....the outside headers tubes are 1/4" smaller than the ports in the heads. That means aftermarket gaskets (except the ones that come with them) only have 1/16" of gasket that can seal.....not enough at all.

The exhaust port is 1.25" x 1.75", but the headers are 1.07" x 1.70"......this will hurt performance and give you sealing problems.

I am gonna have to buy a new set of headers when I put my eddy heads on, cuz the 9 month old summit ones won't work worth a crap !!!!!!!!!

I've got a set of Gibson shorty headers on my `02 360 Ram. I love em! I can't really say anything about leaks cause they've only been on about a month. I have no complaints though so far. They were installed by my local Dodge Speed Shop, and were recommended by them as well. I have them connected to the Gibson Extreme Dual Exhaust system too. They have great sound, and really boosted my low end & mid-range power. Just another manufacturer you may wanna consider.
